What is Amboseli National Park known for?

The landscape of Amboseli National Park is primarily aracterized by steppes and ains,interspersed with some shrubs and acacia trees. However, the area is also known for the presence of swamps. This while in general there is relatively little rain compared to other parts of Kenya and Tanzania. The swamps in combination with the drought guarantee a unique ecosystem. The close presence of Mount Kilimanjaro with its snowy peaks makes for unforgettable pictures.

Amboseli National Park is 392 km2 and is home to the highest number of elephants per square kilometer in all of Africa. During a safari, seeing elephants is almost guaranteed. In fact, you can often get very close to the elephants because of the little vegetation here.

The roads in Amboseli National Park are mostly unpaved. However, due to the enormous drought in this region, these dirt roads are good for driving. The signage is also excellent. You can therefore make a safari here on your own with a rental car.

The local Maasai tribe

The Masai are the original inhabitants of the area that now houses the Amboseli National Park. At the beginning of the 20th century, this area was declared a reserve for members of the Masai peoe. In the middle of that century, the Kenyan government took back the area to start the Amboseli National Park. In 2005, control of the country was returned to the Masai.
