For almost a decade, a man from the district of Kassel has been building luxury houses in Tulum on the Caribbean coast. Nico Wilmes originally came to Mexico as a backpacker.
Tulum – When Nico Wilmes wanted to discover the world again, his girlfriend put him in kassel before the oice: the journey or me. With his company Los Amigos Tulum, the 41-year-old has helped transform the sleepy fishing village in the jungle into one of the trendiest travel destinations in the world.
Stars like Leonardo DiCaprio and the Rolling Stones relax not far from the famous Mayan ruins. Wilmes has realized twelve large projects, including Central Park Tulum with 54 luxury apartments including a mega solar power ant and a climate-neutral fitness studio. According to their own statements, Los Amigos makes 34 million euros in sales a year.

About the end of his relationship back then and his unusual path, Wilmes says: "You have to be ready to leave everything behind. That's the only way to make a fresh start.” When he talks, he sometimes sounds like a motivational guru who writes self-help books. In fact, he and his business partner, the American Marc Levy, have already published a book that tells the story of their company's success. The title: "Backpacking to the Moon" (roughly: backpacking to the moon). Both met while traveling in Guatemala.
At the age of 18, Wilmes had already founded a packaging company in northern Hesse. The former Friedri List student got to know Subway while on vacation in Australia. A little later he opened a bran of the fast food ain at Kasseler Stern. However, he was not happy as an entrepreneur in his home country: "I found Germany so cumbersome."
